If Everything Is Energy and Energy Fields, Could There Be a Non-Physical Form of Consciousness?
A Thesis Submitted in Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Consciousness Studies and Theoretical Physics
Abstract
This thesis posits that if physical reality is fundamentally energetic—as described by relativistic and quantum field theories—then consciousness may not be strictly confined to classical neurobiological substrates. We examine the hypothesis that consciousness possesses non-physical or non-local aspects mediated through energetic fields, potentially existing independently of localized brain matter. Drawing upon quantum field theory, integrated information theory (IIT), biofield research, and anomalous cognition studies, we argue that coherent field dynamics provide a plausible mechanism for extended awareness. While acknowledging the speculative nature of non-physical claims, we present theoretical models, mathematical formalisms, and empirical correlates that support further rigorous investigation. This work bridges physics, neuroscience, and philosophy of mind, proposing testable predictions for future empirical validation.
Keywords: consciousness, energy fields, non-local awareness, quantum fields, biofield, integrated information theory, hard problem of consciousness.
1. Introduction
The unification of mass and energy through Einstein’s mass-energy equivalence, expressed as
¹
where is energy, is mass, and is the speed of light, fundamentally reframes matter as a condensed form of energy. Quantum field theory (QFT) extends this by describing all particles as excitations in underlying quantum fields that permeate spacetime. In this paradigm, the universe is not a collection of discrete objects but a dynamic web of energetic interactions.²
If everything reduces to energy and fields, the question of consciousness—subjective, qualitative experience—demands reevaluation. Traditional materialism locates consciousness entirely within brain processes powered by metabolic energy (e.g., ATP hydrolysis yielding approximately 30.5 kJ/mol per molecule). However, the “hard problem” (Chalmers, 1995) persists: why do physical processes give rise to inner experience at all?
This thesis argues that consciousness may be an intrinsic or emergent property of energetic organization, potentially allowing non-physical or non-local forms. We integrate relativistic energy equations, quantum information, field theories of mind, and anomalous empirical data to build a coherent case. While definitive proof remains elusive, the cumulative evidence warrants treating non-physical consciousness as a viable hypothesis worthy of high-level scholarly scrutiny.
2. Theoretical Background: Energy as the Substrate of Reality
2.1 Relativistic and Quantum Foundations
The stress-energy tensor in general relativity encodes the distribution of energy and momentum, curving spacetime according to Einstein’s field equations:
¹
Energy density thus influences geometry itself. In QFT, the vacuum is not empty but filled with fluctuating fields. Consciousness, if field-like, could interact with or arise from these vacuum fluctuations or coherent excitations.²
2.2 Consciousness and Information
Integrated Information Theory (IIT) formalizes consciousness through a quantity (phi), measuring the irreducible cause-effect power of a system. High systems exhibit integrated information that cannot be reduced to parts. If information is physically encoded in energetic states (e.g., quantum coherence or EM fields), then sufficiently complex field configurations could support consciousness beyond classical brains.³
Panpsychism and dual-aspect monism further propose that energetic substrates possess intrinsic proto-conscious properties, scaling to full awareness in organized systems.
3. Empirical and Phenomenological Correlates
3.1 Biofield and Subtle Energy Research
The human biofield is hypothesized as a complex endogenous energy field influencing physiology. Studies on distant biofield healing demonstrate statistically significant psychological improvements, suggesting field-mediated information transfer.⁴
For instance, Trivedi et al. (2024) reported reduced mental health symptoms via distant interventions, consistent with non-local energetic effects.⁵
3.2 Anomalous Cognition and NDEs
Veridical NDEs during flat EEG challenge brain-bound models. UVA Perceptual Studies document cases where awareness persists or operates non-locally. These suggest consciousness may utilize field-like mechanisms when neural energy metabolism is compromised.⁶
3.3 Neuroimaging of Extended States
fMRI and EEG studies of advanced practitioners reveal gamma synchrony and altered network dynamics (e.g., DMN desynchronization), indicating highly coherent energetic states correlating with unity and expanded awareness.⁷
4. Mathematical and Mechanistic Models
A candidate model treats consciousness as a resonant field phenomenon. Consider the brain’s EM field approximated by Maxwell’s equations with source terms from neural currents:
²
Coherent, large-scale field solutions could integrate information globally. In quantum terms, orchestrated objective reduction (Orch-OR) links consciousness to microtubule quantum computations, where gravitational objective reduction selects conscious moments from superpositions. Energy scales here involve Planck-level phenomena, potentially interfacing with vacuum fields.
For non-local aspects, consider entanglement or non-local field correlations:
²
Such correlations could enable distributed awareness if consciousness couples to quantum fields.
5. Discussion: Implications for Non-Physical Consciousness
The evidence, while not conclusive, converges on the plausibility of non-physical forms. Ontologically, consciousness as fundamental (like energy) resolves the hard problem. Empirically, anomalies and biofield effects suggest extension beyond the skull. Predictively, testable via improved NDE protocols, biofield detectors, and quantum-biology experiments.⁴⁵⁶
Challenges include falsifiability and integration with conservation laws. Future work should prioritize rigorous, replicated studies of field-mediated cognition.
6. Conclusion
In an energetic universe governed by and quantum fields, non-physical consciousness is not only possible but theoretically coherent. This thesis synthesizes physics, neuroscience, and anomalous research to argue for expanded models of mind. We urge the scholarly council to support interdisciplinary programs investigating these frontiers. The implications—for philosophy, ethics, and human potential—are profound.
